THE LAST STAND (B)

Bottom Line: A refreshingly over-the-top and violently giddy action flick that effectively sets up a story, builds characters and engages with its unabashed confidence and love of destruction.  The small town cop vs. drug kingpin and his goons plot is simplistic in nature – but the action is vigorous, the comedy is deliberate – and the requisite mayhem, cheese and one-liners welcomingly harken back to the shoot-em up movies of the late 80’s/early 90’s.  He may be moving a bit slower but it’s great to see Aw-nuld on screen again (in something that doesn’t suck) as he hams it up and creakily blows things away – if you’re in to that kind of thing, then you’re gonna have a simple-minded blast.  If his cinematic outings continue to be this fun, I’m hoping that indeed he’ll be back…again!
Starring: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Johnny Knoxville and Forest Whitaker
Directed by: Ji-woon Kim
Rated: R
Running time: 107 minutes
Story: A drug cartel leader busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexico border – where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.
