CONTRABAND (D)

Bottom Line: More like CONTRA-BLAND. Wahlberg’s latest may host a more talented cast than any January released movie has a right to but it all still adds up to little more than a funky bunch of convoluted, predictable, recycled and rhythmless heist-like high jinks. …and the few slight thrills that do exist don’t even happen until the remaining minutes of the final act – as if someone looked at their watch while filming and thought, ‘Whoa, we need to wrap this thing up’. Too little too late, Bahsten Mahk – say ‘Hi’ to yah mutha for me…

Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Giovanni Ribisi
Rated: R
Directed by: Baltasar Kormakur
Running time: 110 minutes
Story: Chris Farraday long ago abandoned his life of crime, but after his brother-in-law, Andy, botches a drug deal for his ruthless boss, Tim Briggs, Chris is forced back into doing what he does best--running contraband--to settle Andy's debt. Chris is a legendary smuggler and quickly assembles a crew with the help of his best friend, Sebastian, to head to Panama and return with millions in counterfeit bills. Things quickly fall apart and with only hours to reach the cash, Chris must use his rusty skills to successfully navigate a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate, and sons become their target. Here's a movie that unfortunately is critic-proof especially with January release.

But Haywire with solid reivews will probably be ignored. I hope not.

I remember back in the 80s ..when Road Warrior with solid reviews was largely ignored in favor of the next Smokey and the Bandit movie.

Well, don't get me started.

It's not just the action genre.

The critics love it so I'll probably hate it applies there too except for the Pixar stuff.

gman --amends previous posting to clarify;

Actually, it's next weekend when" Haywire " 100% t-meter meets Kate Beckensale's "Underworld --Awakening"

Secondly, the other genre was chidren's movies...

Sorry about that.

HAYWIRE is fun - and will more than likely tank with its 2,000 theater count against UNDER 'Not Screened for Critics' WORLD and it's 2,900 or even EXTREMELY LOUD's Oscar baiting 2,500. Heck, if RED TAILS (2,500) delivers the visual goods the trailers promise it could beat it as well. HAYWIRE, which is the most enjoyable of the bunch (assuming UNDERWORLD stinks because they don't want us to see it), just might come in furth place. Hope not as well - but we shall see.
