THE RUM DIARY (C-)

Bottom Line: Johhny Depp gives it his all in this love letter to the work of the late author, Hunter S. Thompson. Unfortunately, Depp’s all just ain’t enough as THE RUM DIARY is a two-hour, liquor-infused exercise in trying really hard to give a damn. It’s a well made, colorful and occasionally spirited film but the praise ends there as the rest is unfocused, meandering and serves very little purpose. Once I slipped out of the theater, the movie slipped my mind. I feel pretty dirty just saying/typing it but this movie made me long for a fifth round of PIRATES.

Rated: R
Starring: Johnny Depp, Aaron Eckhart, Amber Heard and Giovanni Ribisi
Running time: 119 minutes
Story: Based on the Hunter S. Thompson novel, this movie tells the story of Paul Kemp, a freelance journalist who finds himself at a critical turning point in his life while writing for a run-down newspaper in the Caribbean. Paul is challenged on many levels as he tries to carve out a more secure niche for himself amidst a group of lost souls all bent on self-destruction. (GK Films)
