CONTAGION (B)

Starring: Matt Damon, Gwenyth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet, Jude Law and Marion Cotillard

Rated: PG-13
Story: Contagion follows the rapid progress of a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. (Warner Bros.)

Bottom Line: This Purell Hand Sanitizer stock price multiplier shows us how media, suburbia, big cities, countries, corporations, military, government - how everyone deals with the fear/reality of an airborne virus. Were each group developed a bit more the movie might have fully engrossed – but as it is this heebie-jeebie-fest still remains an intricate, smart, thought-provoking, well-acted, fear-inducing, germaphobe-creating and don’t-cough-in-the-theater-unless-you-want-uptight-glances-from-those-newly-formed-germaphobes bio-thriller. It’s fun…but in a I’m-glad-it’s-not-happening-to-me way.

Well put. I have mixed feelings. I like the fragmented Soderberg (Traffic) style here. At the same time, I agree that when one chooses this approach, you sacrifice totally connecting with any one character.

In this case, the director is the star and it's another Soderberg risky project that works.

Uh, excuse me while I cough, I think we're on the same page.
