PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES (C+)

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush and Ian McShane

Directed by: Rob Marshall (CHICAGO, NINE and MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA)
Rated: PG-13
Story: Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica, Captain Jack Sparrow is not sure if it's love—or if she's a ruthless con artist who's using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the "Queen Anne's Revenge," the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard, Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn't know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. (Walt Disney Pictures)

Bottom Line: Yo ho ho and bottle of ho-hum! No stranger here, in the fourth installment of the popular PIRATES franchise, as everything seems eerily familiar – just made with a lot less passion. Clocking in at almost 2 hours and 20 minutes, ON STRANGER TIDES is a needlessly long, meandering, action-forced and semi-incohesive sea-going flick that was made to deliver boat loads of money and mildly entertain (which it does do from time to time). Although it neither sinks nor swims, the whole affair has lost most of its freshness, grit, swagger and big budget pop. It’s an adventure about the fountain of youth that’s lost its youthful charm.
